Johnny Depp leaves Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, say reports

Johnny Depp will not appear in any further Pirates of the Caribbean films, according to reports.
Speaking to DailyMail TV, original screenwriter Stuart Beattie nodded when it was suggested Depp’s time as the star of the series was over.

“I think he’s had a great run,” he said. “Obviously, he’s made that character his own, and it’s become the thing that he’s most famous for now.
“And kids all over the world love him as that character, so I think it’s been great for him. It’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

Depp, 55, has played the louche Captain Jack Sparrow in five films over 15 years in the Disney franchise, most recently in 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales.

On Wednesday it was reported that Disney was considering rebooting the series by drafting in Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
The previous films – inspired by a fairground ride – have in total made more than $3bn, but there have, broadly speaking, been diminishing returns with each episode.

Depp will next be seen in Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The actor has experienced a backlash amid claims of domestic violence from ex-wife Amber Heard, as well as counterclaims of financial blackmail.

The actor’s finances have also come under scrutiny after a lawsuit filed in May by former bodyguards attacked Depp’s record on wages and working conditions. In July, he was sued by a crew member allegedly punched by the actor on the set of a film about the murder of Notorious BIG. A month later, the film’s planned release was shelved.

Watch Iron Man's complete movies in his MCU journey

While the plot of Avengers 4 is being kept tightly under wraps, it's widely assumed that part of the story will involve bidding a final goodbye to Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man.
Whether Tony Stark is blown to kingdom come or gets to retire peacefully to an island with Pepper Potts, it would mark the end of 10 years of Downey Jr starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It's been quite a ride, and here's how to follow the whole thing from his Iron Man debut to the tragedy of Infinity War. You can watch the whole journey of  Iron Man's movies free on Decentralized Cuckoo Player.

1. Iron Man (2008)
Back where it all began. You might have forgotten by now, but Tony started out as an arms dealer and generally not a nice guy. But his kidnapping by terrorists and betrayal by his business partner Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) resulted in his transformation into Iron Man.

2. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
While Tony doesn't really play a role in the plot of this Edward Norton-starring movie, he shows up in the post-credits scene to chat to General Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt) and plant more seeds for the eventual Avengers movie.

3. Iron Man 2 (2010)
Tony was back for the MCU's first sequel, facing off against the vengeful Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) and rival industrialist Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). He also fought alongside Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) for the first time, making this a sort of proto-Avengers team-up. Meanwhile, the arc reactor that keeps him alive is on the fritz. That can't be good...

4. Avengers Assemble (2012)
The Avengers got together for the first time in Joss Whedon's mega-hit, with Tony and Captain America (Chris Evans) forming the central yin and yang at the heart of the movie. They fight off Loki and his army of alien Chitauri, with Iron Man striking the fatal blow to the invasion by flying through a portal into space with a nuke strapped to his back. Rather him than us.

5. Iron Man 3 (2013)
Struggling with PTSD following his near-death experience in Avengers Assemble, Tony starts to behave erratically. Unfortunately, this includes taunting the shady terrorist The Mandarin, which results in a direct attack on his home. Tony is left on the run without his suit, trying to prevent the rise of Extremis – a mystery 14 years in the making.
The film ends with Tony removing the arc reactor from his chest and blowing up all his suits. Iron Man is no more!

6. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Did we say 'Iron Man is no more'? Scratch that – he's totally more.
Hoping to protect the world from future Chitauri-esque threats, Iron Man creates the defensive artificial intelligence Ultron. Unfortunately, Ultron is actually mad and evil instead.
With the help of his Avengers pals and some new faces including Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and another AI he creates(?!), the Vision (Paul Bettany), Tony is able to stop Ultron, but not before massive destruction is wreaked in the fictional eastern-European country Sokovia.

When Cap's old pal, the Winter Soldier, is framed for a terrorist attack, Tony finds himself facing off against Steve Rogers in an all-out superhero civil war. And a dark secret from the Winter Soldier's past threatens to destroy Iron Man and Captain America's relationship for good.

Tony takes a supporting role in the debut solo adventure of his new Civil War protégé, Spider-Man (Tom Holland). For once, Iron Man gets to play the mature grown-up as Peter Parker's impatience leads him to bite off more than he can chew in the fight with the villainous Vulture.

9. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Two years later, Tony and Steve still haven't made up. When Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) arrives on Earth to warn the Avengers that Thanos is coming, it looks like a reunion is about to happen... until he's whisked away into space with Spider-Man and his new frenemy Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
They team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy on Titan to fight Thanos, but the Infinity Snap leaves Tony (and Cap) as some of the last superheroes standing. Next up, Avengers 4...

5 Doctor Strange villains who Benedict Cumberbatch could battle in the MCU sequel

He's already defeated the interdimensional demon Dormammu, but other mystical threats will be lurking on the horizon. Here are some of the likely candidates to cast a deadly spell over the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1. Mordo
First up we have Karl Mordo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor in the first Doctor Strange movie. By the end of the film, he had turned against his former ally Strange and murdered the magician Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), declaring that there are "too many sorcerers".
In the comics, he's served since the very beginning as Strange's nemesis, a fellow student of the Ancient One who turned to the dark arts in his quest for power.
Mordo is pretty much guaranteed to show up in Doctor Strange 2. But supervillains rarely act alone…

2. Shuma-Gorath
The first movie featured Strange's classic, near-omnipotent foe Dormammu, and if there's anyone in his rogue's gallery able to match his threat and raw power, it's Shuma-Gorath.
Inspired by HP Lovecraft-style monsters, Shuma-Gorath appears as a giant eye surrounded by tentacles. It's basically an interdimensional being of endless power that exists only to bring chaos, destruction and death to the universe. If Doctor Strange 2 wants to up the stakes, Shuma-Gorath is the way to go.

3. Umar
The idea that the sequel will introduce Dormammu's sister Umar feels somewhat unlikely, but would be a good way of tackling the MCU's woeful deficit of female villains. The super-powered sorceress is certainly no pushover, and she tends to offer a (tiny) bit more nuance than her irredeemably evil bro.
Fun fact: She used to be Strange's mother-in-law in the comics (he was married to her daughter, Clea). Try fitting that into your story, Marvel.

Doctor Strange (2016) - Decentralized cuckoo player

cuckoo://QmRf29zEFSoX4Sxx7KoTwiaNJHZJxQsnUDX4mfTx6YB5JP.video

4. Nightmare
Plenty of Strange's villains come packing incomprehensible amounts of power, but Nightmare (who appear in the doctor's very first adventure) is stranger and subtler than that. The living embodiment of dreams, a demon who preys on people's fears while they sleep.
With Nightmare, nothing is what it seems. And like Freddy Krueger, once you've fallen asleep, you're completely in his power. If Marvel wants to bring some (family-friendly) horror to the MCU, featuring Nightmare in Doctor Strange 2 would be a great choice. (He's a favourite with Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, too.)

5. The Empirikul
If Mordo is on a mission to destroy magic, then an army of unstoppable anti-magic warriors would make very handy allies. Enter the Empirikul.
Introduced relatively recently to the comics, the Empirikul were an interdimensional army led by a chap called the Imperator, who used their advanced technology to bring magic to the brink of extinction, making them the natural allies for Mordo's mission.

Small YouTube Creators will be Driven away as EU's new copyright legislation, said by YouTube CEO

The European Union’s contentious copyright directive became a major talking point for YouTube creators last month, as people rushed to inform their audiences just how consequential the new directive could become.

Now, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki is adding her concerned voice to the chorus. Wojcicki spent the first portion of her letter to creators addressing Article 13, a new requirement that would give YouTube the sole burden of preventing copyrighted content from being uploaded and shared by its creators. Right now, YouTube allows remixed copyright material to exist on its platform under the Fair Use Act. But critics of Article 13 suggest that as YouTube becomes more liable for any copyrighted content, a harsher filter will apply to any video being uploaded to the platform, and that could stifle creators’ work.

It’s a particular issue for YouTube, where Fair Use has allowed creators to thrive, spurring an entire generation of remix culture that defines YouTube’s community. Wojcicki wrote about this problem in her letter to creators, condemning the EU’s decision to approve the copyright directive and acknowledging that this will lead to issues far beyond Europe’s borders.

“THIS LEGISLATION POSES A THREAT TO BOTH YOUR LIVELIHOOD AND YOUR ABILITY TO SHARE YOUR VOICE WITH THE WORLD.”

“This legislation poses a threat to both your livelihood and your ability to share your voice with the world,” Wojcicki wrote. “And, if implemented as proposed, Article 13 threatens hundreds of thousands of jobs, European Creators, businesses, artists, and everyone they employ. The proposal will force platforms, like YouTube, to prioritize content from a small number of large companies. The burden of copyright proof will be too high for most independent creators to instantly demonstrate. There is a better way forward for copyright online but it’s critical you speak up now as this decision may be finalized by the end of the year.”

Wojcicki isn’t the first YouTube executive to speak out against the EU’s copyright directive. Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s head of business and the man who oversees creators, issued a blog post prior to the vote, expressing his own concerns about how it could affect creators.

“Copyright holders have control over their content: they can use our tools to block or remove their works, or they can keep them on YouTube and earn advertising revenue,” Kyncl wrote. “In over 90 percent of cases, they choose to leave the content up. Enabling this new form of creativity and engagement with fans can lead to mass global promotion and even more revenue for the artist.”

Even some of the internet’s foremost pioneers — like Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, and Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia — have argued that the directive is too vague in its current form to operate properly.

“THERE IS A BETTER WAY FORWARD FOR COPYRIGHT ONLINE.”

“We support the consideration of measures that would improve the ability for creators to receive fair remuneration for the use of their works online,” an open letter reads. “But we cannot support Article 13, which would mandate Internet platforms to embed an automated infrastructure for monitoring and censorship deep into their networks. For the sake of the Internet’s future, we urge you to vote for the deletion of this proposal.”

There’s another reason YouTube executives like Wojcicki and Kyncl are outspoken on the issue: if the primary burden lies with YouTube to prevent copyrighted content from spreading, so does the financial weight. YouTube has already invested more than $60 million into its Content ID system, which creators have argued suffers from its own faults. But the new EU directive would pressure YouTube to be even more proactive about protecting itself from being held accountable. Some small YouTube creators are building their channels and uploading their videos on decentralized cuckoo player to avoid the deletion of their own creative videos or the infringement of the defendant.

The European Parliament will vote on a final approval regarding the Copyright Directive in January, and, as Wojcicki suggests, its approval will have a major impact on the internet culture that users know today.

Wonder Woman II 1984 delayed to 2020

This is not so wonder-ful.

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment have delayed Wonder Woman 1984 by seven months, pushing the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel back from November 1, 2019 to June 5, 2020.
Image: Wonder Woman on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot dropped the news on Twitter on Monday, but rather than express sadness or disappointment over the delay, Gadot actually celebrated it.

"Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home. June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!" the star tweeted, adding two sparkling light emojis and an emoji of a woman crossing her arms a la Diana Prince.

For those confused by Gadot's mention of bringing Wonder Woman 1984 back to the place it belongs, the actress is referring to a summer release date. The first Wonder Woman film opened on June 2, 2017, going on to earn a staggering, multi-record-breaking $821.8 million worldwide. Wonder Woman 1984 shifting from a November debut to a June launch truly does place the sequel in its so-described home: a summer month where it can reign supreme.

As Warner Bros.' president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein stated shortly after Gadot's tweet (via The Hollywood Reporter), "We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did. This move lands the film exactly where it belongs."
Image: Wonder Woman on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
There are two upsides of Wonder Woman 1984 moving from November 2019 to June 2020, apart from the fact that the superhero sequel will have a better chance of turning another massive profit at the box office. The first is that that the film no longer has to compete with director Todd Phillips' Joker, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the man who eventually snaps and transforms into Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime. Joker is set to open on October 4, 2019, meaning that, prior to this launch date switcheroo, Wonder Woman 1984 would have to go up against the gritty origin story movie just a few weeks later. The second silver lining is that the Wonder Woman 1984 cast and crew have more breathing room to wrap up filming and complete post-production. A lot goes into making a superhero tentpole of Wonder Woman 1984's caliber, so the creative team scoring a few extra months to edit, add in digital effects, and even film reshoots if necessary is a blessing.

Now set to to debut on June 5, 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 will go up against another Gadot-starring movie: Red Notice, the Dwayne Johnson-led thriller written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, which opens on June 12, 2020. Something tells us that the Wonder Woman sequel will have little trouble coming out on top.

With Gadot once again top-lining as the titular heroine, Chris Pine reprising his role as the apparently miraculously revived Steve Trevor, and Kristen Wiig joining the DC Extended Universe as the Barbara Ann Minerva iteration of Cheetah, Wonder Woman 1984 has a ton going for it — more than enough to make the wait from now until June 5, 2020 well worth it.

The best Marvel Movies Easter eggs you missed so far

The Marvel Cinematic Universe produced 20 films over its first 10 years, brought in billions of dollars at the box office, made superstars of many of its cast members, and generally grew to dominate a vast swath of pop culture along the way. To say it's a detailed world would be an understatement. It's the most ambitious shared universe ever committed to film, full of links between individual movies, threads running through the whole overarching narrative, and tiny details you only catch on your fourth, fifth, or tenth viewing. That means it's a world packed with Easter eggs, and MCU fans have never stopped hunting for the best ones.

Full list of all upcoming Marvel Movies on Decentralized Cuckoo Player

When thinking about MCU Easter eggs, the sheer number of hours available to watch means there are dozens to choose from, some very subtle and some more obvious than a Stan Lee cameo. With that in mind, it's almost impossible to list all of the best or hardest to find here, but we'll do our best. Next time you watch through the MCU, here are some Easter eggs you may have missed that you should definitely be on the lookout for.

A familiar plane
Image from Iron Man series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Though the Disney/Fox deal changed things, for years, the worlds of the Avengers and the X-Men have been famously kept separate on the big screen thanks to various movie rights deals. While the Avengers assembled at Marvel Studios, the Marvel Comics mutants had their own adventures over at Fox, but that doesn't mean there weren't any knowing winks exchanged.
For example, the scene in Iron Man in which Tony Stark conducts a test flight of his new armor for the first time, and decides to see just how high he can fly. He asks his A.I. assistant JARVIS what the altitude record is for a very specific plane: The SR-71 Blackbird. That's a real plane, of course, but it also has a place in Marvel Comics. The Blackbird was used as the model for the jet flown to missions by the X-Men, and has often been referred to as simply "the Blackbird" when it's not being called the X-Jet. Now, the film of course can't specify that Stark is referring to Charles Xavier's private super plane, but it was a nice nod in the direction of X-Men fans nonetheless.

Another Golden Age hero
Image from Captain America series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Captain America: The First Avenger takes Marvel fans back to World War II, and the time when Steve Rogers not only became Captain America in fiction, but also when the character was dreamed up in real life. In doing so, it creates an invaluable atmosphere of patriotic pride and ambition, and that ambition reveals itself in particular during the Stark Expo scene, where if you look closely you'll see another classic Marvel character created back when the company was still Timely Comics. As Steve and Bucky are on their date, they walk past a glass display close with a costume in it that's labeled "Dr. Phineas Horton Presents The Synthetic Man." Phineas Horton is the scientist who created the original Human Torch, an android who eventually took on the name Jim Hammond, all the way back in Marvel Comics #1 in 1939. The character, who was initially kept in a glass cylinder much like the one in the film, remains an important foundational creation in the Marvel Universe, though he's never been seen as much as Cap or even his other Golden Age counterpart, Namor the Sub-Mariner. Still, this shot establishes that some version of him existed in the MCU at some point, so maybe one day we'll flash back again and get the full story of the synthetic man and his adventures.

A universe we know and love
Image from Thor series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a world unto itself, but it exists in the greater realm of Marvel Entertainment, which itself contains a vast multiverse of various worlds featuring alternate versions of characters and worlds. The MCU even has its own designated reality number: 199999. That places it within the greater Marvel multiverse, which means that whether we'll ever see it or not, there is a cosmic link between the cinematic versions of these heroes and villains and their prime continuity comic book counterparts. That link was further emphasized in Thor: The Dark World, when Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) laid out his understanding of reality on a giant chalkboard while in a mental institution. Among his other scribblings, including a map of the Nine Realms, he wrote one key phrase: "616 Universe." That number is the official designation of the main Marvel Comics universe, and whether Selvig discovered that world or just scribbled a random number down isn't clear, but it is clear that the filmmakers wanted us to see the connection.

A vital creator
Image from Captain America series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
When it comes to Marvel Comics creators appearing on the big screen, there's always going to be one name at the top: Stan Lee. There's good reason for that, but Lee is not the only Marvel luminary to pop up in the MCU at one point or another. There are actually several examples of this, including Thor writers Walt Simonson and J. Michael Straczynski emerging in that character's films, but one of the most important came in the background of a scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. As Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) is questioning The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), a team of handlers are standing around the room. One of them, seen on the left side of this image, is Ed Brubaker, an Eisner Award-winning comic book writer responsible for resurrecting Bucky Barnes as The Winter Soldier in Captain America #1 in 2005. Before Brubaker joined Captain America, Bucky had been dead for decades, and was long considered one of the rare comics characters who would never return from the grave. Without Brubaker, the MCU would be a very different place indeed, so it's nice to see him get a little moment here.

A sign of things to come
Image from Guardians of the Galaxy series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
If you're looking for an Easter egg hunt that will take hours contained within one film, look no further than the Collector's (Benicio del Toro) hideaway on Knowhere in Guardians of the Galaxy. The man's massive treasure trove of artifacts and living specimens seems to go on forever, and if you're willing to be patient and liberal with the pause button, you're likely to notice quite a few interesting things. Among his finds are a Chitauri from The Avengers, a Dark Elf from Thor: The Dark World, Cosmo the Space Dog, and, of course, Howard the Duck. There's another find tucked away in that room, though, that could have massive implications for the future of the MCU. In the image above you can see a cocoon-like object that writer/director James Gunn later hinted was the gestation place of Adam Warlock, a character later further teased in a post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. As it turns out, the two objects might not be the exact same cocoon, but the visual cues were already there. Adam Warlock has massive cosmic implications for Marvel's future, so if he does show up at some point, we can tie it all back to this.

A speech for the ages

Some Easter eggs are so specific that you'll only recognize them if you carefully read one very specific comic book issue, and that's the case with this gem from Captain America: Civil War. At the funeral for the legendary Peggy Carter, her niece Sharon (Emily VanCamp) delivers the eulogy, and passes on some words of wisdom her aunt once shared with her. Sharon emphasized Peggy's advice in times of trial, when it's important to stick to your convictions, and said that Peggy told her when the world told her she was wrong when she knew she was right, she was supposed to "plant yourself like a tree," and when the world told her to move she was supposed to say "No, you move." It's a powerful moment, and for certain comic book readers it was made all the more powerful by the knowledge that it's a speech lifted largely from Amazing Spider-Man #537, a comic tying in to the original Civil War event in which a very similar speech is given by none other than Captain America. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely definitely did their homework.

Connecting to the small screen (sort of)

Some Easter eggs begin as an amusing idea, and then they just don't stick, either because the scenes don't really come together or because some other part of the universe is attempting to work with the same concepts. That was the case with one particular hidden gem in Doctor Strange, which has been semi-retconned by the events of Hulu's Runaways TV series. At various points in the film (including, mostly, in deleted scenes), we see glimpses of the Hong Kong Sanctum, where sorcerers work to guard that corner of the world from magical threats. Among them is a staff-wielding character named Tina Minoru, played by Linda Louise Duan. We only know her name because she's listed in the credits (she's never named onscreen), but Minoru happens to be the mother of Nico Minoru, one of the main stars of Runaways, who eventually wields her mother's staff (known as The Staff of One) herself. Of course, Tina Minoru was recast for Runaways, but it's still a nice touch.

Former champions

Some Marvel characters might not be ready for prime time yet, but they're still beloved by enough fans and filmmakers to make at least a brief appearance in the MCU. That's manifested itself in many ways, but perhaps none more grand than Thor: Ragnarok, when we see the Grandmaster's Palace on Sakaar for the first time. The towering structure is adorned with various shimmering statues depicting the heads of the great champions that fought in the arena in years past, and while the still-under-construction Hulk head might end up dominating the whole thing, the heads already placed there are particularly fascinating. They include Bi-Beast, Man-Thing, Ares (yes, even more mythologically inspired Marvel characters) and, of course, Beta Ray Bill, a longtime ally of Thor who fans have been hoping to see on the big screen for years. We may not see any of these characters actually living and breathing in the MCU anytime soon, but these statues were enough to let us know they exist, and that's a start.

A subtle Captain Marvel connection
Image from Avengers series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Sometimes an Easter egg might not even be intended as a hidden gem for fans to find, but when fans latch on to something, it's hard to shake the feeling that everything is connected. In the weeks after Avengers: Infinity War hit theaters, MCU fans online started to notice something particularly interesting about the wardrobe choice of Cull Obsidian (he's the big guy on the left). Notice the sash dangling down from his waist? Well, at first glance that's just a colorful sash, but compare it to the costume color scheme of one Carol Danvers — a.k.a. Captain Marvel — and a connection begins to emerge. He's from space, she's spent a lot of time in space. He's in Infinity War, she's slated to show up in the sequel. Of course, it could just be a coincidence, but it's possible that these two have tangled before… or that they met once and he said "I love your outfit" and decided to borrow her look.

A humble farmer
Image from Avengers series movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Avengers: Infinity War is very loosely based on the 1991 Marvel Comics event series The Infinity Gauntlet, and while the plot differs significantly, the film bears many nods and winks to the text. For example, Bruce Banner crashes through the roof of Doctor Strange's Sanctum, echoing the moment when the Silver Surfer did that in the comics. Of all the moments that made Gauntlet fans particularly happy, though, one that really stands out comes in the film's very last shot, when Thanos sits down at his humble new home to "watch the sun rise on a grateful universe." As he walks to his seat, limping from his battle wounds but satisfied with the work he's done, if you look closely in the lower right corner of the shot you'll see something standing amid the crops growing there. It's a scarecrow made from his old battle armor. At the end of Infinity Gauntlet, Thanos gives up his quest for ultimate power after the battle, believing instead that he should lead a simple life. He takes up farming, and makes a scarecrow with his armor. It's two very different ways of arriving at the same image, but it's still a great reference.

Guardians 3: Marvel reportedly eyeing female directors to replace James Gunn

A lady might take the lead on the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

Rumor has it that Marvel Studios is eyeing female filmmakers to replace James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Image: Dark Phoenix on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
This tidbit comes to us from DanielRPK of Super Bro Movies, who tweeted on Friday that he heard from "someone pretty reliable" that Marvel wants a female director for the third Guardians movie, which lost director Gunn in July 2018 after the Walt Disney Company became aware of controversial past tweets of his and subsequently fired him.

DanielRPK stressed that this is just a rumor, but around the same time he shared the unconfirmed information, Omega Underground co-founder and editor-in-chief Christopher Marc spoke about it as well, seemingly backing up the buzz. Marc posted on his Twitter page, "Hearing that the bulk of the directors Marvel is looking at to replace James Gunn on GUARDIANS 3 are ladies and the names are fantastic!"

While Marc didn't drop any names, Super Bro Movies' Jackson Hayes did. Hayes reported that the outlet was "provided the rumored shortlist of directors that are potentially up for the position." The list reportedly includes Mudbound filmmaker Dee Rees, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones director Michelle MacLaren, Star Trek 4 director S.J. Clarkson, and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Jane Campion.

Known for her 2011 art drama film Pariah, her 2015 made-for-television movie Bessie, and her 2017 Oscar-winning film Mudbound, Rees has gained a sparkling reputation for her "visionary artistry and immaculate storytelling." She hasn't yet dipped her toes into the world of action movies or comic book films, but her experience helming features, penning screenplays, and directing episodes of Empire, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams, and When We Rise has made her one of Hollywood's brightest talents.

As for MacLaren, her credits outside Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones include Westworld, Modern Family, The Deuce, The Leftovers, The Harsh Realm, The X-Files, and so much more. She's also set to direct Universal's Cowboy Ninja Viking, the upcoming feature film based on the Image Comics series of the same name created by writer A.J. Lieberman and artist Riley Rossmo. Guardians of the Galaxy's own Chris Pratt (known in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Star-Lord) actually top-lines Cowboy Ninja Viking, so if MacLaren scores the Guardians Vol. 3 gig, it'll mark the second collaboration between her and Pratt. The fact that she may already have a comic book movie under her belt by the time the third Guardians film starts shooting – Cowboy Ninja Viking is on a production hiatus, while Guardians Vol. 3 isn't expected to begin filming until February 2021 — gives her another leg-up on the rumored competition.

As for Clarkson, she's also no stranger to the world of comic-to-screen adaptations — particularly projects in the Marvel world. Clarkson has worked on Jessica Jones and The Defenders, having directed two episodes of each of the Marvel-Netflix series. Additionally, she's helmed installments of Orange Is the New Black, Hunted, Dexter, Ugly Betty, Doctors, EastEnders, and Bates Motel. Despite predominantly working on TV shows rather than on feature films, Clarkson seems a solid fit for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 given her standing relationship with Marvel.

Campion would be a surprising choice to direct Guardians Vol. 3, considering both her track record of helming dramatic films and the fact that she's mostly focused on directing for television over the past few years, but she has just as much experience (and more in some cases) in the industry as the other three rumored contenders. A maverick pick for sure, Campion could still do something amazing with the Guardians three-quel should she land the job.

Image: Guardians movies on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
Of course, this is all simply speculation as of this writing. Even if Marvel genuinely has narrowed down its choices for the new Guardians Vol. 3 director to Rees, MacLaren, Clarkson, and Campion, the studio still has a tough decision to make in settling on just one for the gig. All four women have the creative wherewithal to do the movie justice, but regardless of which filmmaker Marvel selects, a wave of backlash is bound to crash down after the studio confirms who will take Gunn's place. The director who steps up to the plate will have big shoes to fill and a sea of fans to please, especially since Marvel is still using Gunn's Guardians Vol. 3 script.

We trust that whomever Marvel taps to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, they'll be fantastic. Until the studio makes a formal announcement in that regard, check out the facts about the galaxy-saving A-holes that you probably don't know.

SIX THINGS WE LEARNED FROM THE DARK PHOENIX TRAILER

Thanks to The Late Late Show with James Corden
(The Late Late Show with James Corden - Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo

we finally have a proper look at next February’s Dark Phoenix. With its ominous cover of “The End” and apocalyptic imagery, the trailer seems to be making a very pointed comment about the future of the X-Men film series at 20th Century Fox. Both Dark Phoenix and next August’s The New Mutants could very easily be the last pictures in the series that Fox initiated with 2000’s X-Men. And if that is the case, Dark Phoenix – which dropped “X-Men” from its title – appears ready to send the whole enterprise off on a very dark note.

But that darkness represents only one thing we learned from the trailer – here are six more tantalizing notes from Dark Phoenix.

FRANKLY GREAT UNIFORMS
Image: Dark Phoenix on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
It only took seven films in the mainline X-Men series for the main team to finally adopt the traditional gold X-Men uniforms – Xavier’s (James McAvoy) 1960s team used the look in X-Men: First Class – and boy do they look smart. The large golden X over the chests recalls the uniforms designed by artist Frank Quitely for writer Grant Morrison’s run on the series in the early 2000s. Both wanted to take the characters back to their boarding-school roots and created a collegiate fashion line with the bold X-motif jackets tying the whole aesthetic together.
Here, they replace the more individualized uniforms glimpsed at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse. It would seem Xavier either wants to recall happier days with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) or he wants to corral the group into a more unified frame of mind. Considering the movie X-Men have a habit of splintering, it is unlikely the uniforms will stop it from happening again, especially considering some of the subsequent images in the trailer.
That said, Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and Mystique look great in the new gear.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Despite fundamentally altering the universe in X-Men: Days of Future Past, it seems Charles Xavier could not stop himself from making one fundamental mistake: altering Jean Grey (Sophie Tuner) as a child. In both the trailer and X-Men: The Last Stand, a young Jean Grey already possessed tremendous telekinetic abilities. And, in both cases, Professor X used his considerable telepathic talents to prevent her from accessing her full potential.
In The Last Stand, those powers proved to be advantageous to Magneto, but this time around, it appears the mysterious character played by Jessica Chastain will lead Jean toward the path of the Dark Phoenix. Also, it seems the Phoenix Force will finds its way to Jean via that untapped potential which Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) glimpsed briefly in the previous film.
Then again, the trailer also makes the case that Jean was just born bad. As Magneto puts it: she “came here for permission” to let loose. But how much of that is Jean and how much of it is the Phoenix inside her?

THE WORLD IS ONE THE BRINK (AGAIN)

It wouldn’t be an X-Men movie without the world facing some sort of annihilation. In previous films, that threat was presented by Magento, who tried to turn senators into mutants, unleash an all-out war between humans and mutants, and even nuke Washington D.C. to start his revolution. He also allied with Apocalypse that one time, but he was more of a lackey in that situation than the mastermind of destruction.
This time, the threat will be external as aliens finally make their way into an X-Men film.
At first, it might seem strange to introduce aliens into the mix, but the X-Men have a long history with various cosmic factions back in the comics. The original Dark Phoenix Saga featured the Shi’ar Empire as they attempted to put Jean on trial for the Phoenix Force’s crimes. We seriously doubt we’ll see Jean destroy a planet of broccoli people – one of the more infamous moments in the comics – but an extraterrestrial threat changes the scope of X-Men pictures.
Curiously, Dark Phoenix represents the same move away from the civil rights struggle to world-ending threats the X-Men books experienced in the 1990s. Of course, the pendulum often swings back to the struggle and one imagines it will again when Marvel Studios takes control.

BEAST SWITCHES SIDES

Late in the trailer, as Xavier says “don’t do this,” a brief shot reveals Beast has finally changed sides and joined Magneto. We also see Hank in his non-animal form blaming Xavier for another mistake. This reckoning between the three characters has been a long time coming. Beast was a member of the original X-Men team in the 1960s – and he seems to have aged hardly day in the 30 years between First Class and Dark Phoenix – and caught up in the initial struggle between Charles and Erik’s philosophy. But it seems this time, enough is enough for The Beast.
“You’re always sorry, Charles,” Magneto says at one point. It seems to be a sentiment finally shared by Hank if that scene in the kitchen is anything to go by. We imagine something significant will push Hank to the breaking point. And considering the film’s ties back to First Class, it may revolve around the other remaining character from that film. (More on that in a moment)
It is always possible these three old friends will make peace before the end. It’s been known to happen in X-Men films before and it could be memorable reconciliation, particularly if this really is the end of the film series.

MAGNETO NEVER FINDS PEACE

Despite an earnest attempt to walk away from violence and discord after X-Men: Days of Future Past, it seems Erik Lehnsherr can never find peace. This time around, we see him in some sort of camp away from thoughts of Brotherhoods and working with Sabertooth, but he always keeps that trusty helmet close by. Throughout the series, it has come to represent the character’s anger and his separation from Xavier – indeed, the notion that it can block Charles’s telepathic scans is one of the most prominent holdovers from the first X-Men film – but in its few glimpses in the new trailer, it seems to also represent the life Magneto wishes he could leave locked in an old chest.
But violence is baked into the X-Men premise and Magento’s way of life. Perhaps he, more than Jean, needed to reason to take up the helmet and fight again. And, it seems, Jean gave him one.

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THAT CASKET
Image: Dark Phoenix on Decentralized Video Player Cuckoo
This may constitute a spoiler, so tread carefully.
We repeat: Potential Spoiler Alert.
The prominent use of funeral footage and a casket suggests someone other than Jean Grey will die in the film. And we’re betting it will happen shortly after the film begins.
In the pages of Uncanny X-Men, Jean unequivocally died during a mission into space. She eventually returned when the Phoenix Force took possession of her body. The official description of Dark Phoenix states she survives the mission. So if Jean isn’t in the casket glimpsed in the trailer, who is it?
Our guess is it’s Mystique based on that shot of Beast cradling her. But if this is the end, it could be just about anyone. Well, maybe not Cyclops. They already tried that in The Last Stand and it didn’t work.
Nonetheless, the funereal tone of the whole trailer suggests Fox made a calculated decision to present this as a memorial for nearly twenty years of X-Men pictures. Even if the shots are from late in the film and Jean is in that casket, the X-Men as we’ve known them may also lay to rest beside her.

Dark Phoenix is in theaters February 14, 2019
